The Department of Psychology of Union Christian College is the first department of Psychology started in Kerala. Initially Psychology was a subsidiary subject for the B.A degree philosophy course and the Psychology department was established in the year 1965 when BA degree course in Psychology was started.The department has been fortunate in having eminent teachers since its inception. Late Dr. V K Alexander, the first Head of the department was a renowned clinical Psychologist well known in India and abroad. The department grew and flourished under the guidance of Prof. T Simon and Rev.
 
 
Thomas John (the former Heads of the department of Psychology). The department was fortunate in getting the services of eminent teachers like Dr. P.N.O Tharakan – former Head of the Department of Psychology, Calicut University and Prof. N Kunhikrishnan- present Director of school of Distant Education, Calicut University. Postgraduate course in Psychology was started in 1999 under the initiative of Rev. Thomas John and it is the only College under the M.G University offering Post graduation in Psychology.

International Linkages

The Department has international linkages. Gerald Middents of Austin college, Texas who was in the department as a guest faculty for 3 months in 1999 still continues his association with the department. Every year the Department conducts Middents Endowment Lecture series. The Department is presently collaborating with Dr. Janette Lowry of Austin College, Texas on her project work on Gender Studies and she is on the faculty at present

In the academic realm

a)      Our students bagged the first rank in the years 2001, 2003 and all the first six ranks in 2004 at the BA degree examination of the M.G. University.

b)      The Department bagged the first rank in MA degree examination during the years 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.

c)      3 of our students got the J.R.F (Junior Research Fellowship) and all are pursuing research in various Universities.

d)      One of our P.G students was placed second in the Junior Scientist Award at the 5th International Conference of Somatic Inkblot society held at Ernakulam in November 2004.

Extracurricular level

a)      Students of the department bagged the Ist and IInd place in the National Youth Festival during the year 2002 and 2003 for Western Music held at Warangal and Gwalior.

b)      One undergraduate student won the first prize in the extempore and essay writing at the district, South India level and University level.

c)      Sreelakshmi of III BA was adjudged Kalathilakam in the M.G University Youth Festival of March 2001.

Department Activities

Association    

Psychology association meeting is held on every Wednesday. It gives ample opportunities for the students to conduct Seminars and debates on topics related to Psychology. Inter class cultural competition is also a part of the association activities.

The Department observes every second Saturday of February as the Psychology reunion day. The Alexander Memorial Lecture is also organized on that day.

Psychology association conducted an exhibition “Psycho 2004” between October 7 and to 12 during the World Mental Health week. It highlighted all the aspects of human behaviour, Mental disorders, communication skills and therapeutic intervention programs. Both the exhibition and the psychological laboratory could impart awareness regarding the subject matter of psychology.

Extension programmes of the department include

            1) One day Seminar for student leaders- September 2000

            2) Seminar on Womens’ cell empowerment- November 2001

            3) AIDS awareness programme- January 2002

            4) Seminar on “Status and Rights of Women in Society” jointly by the People’s Council for Social                   justice January 2002

            5) Leadership training for women students January 2003

            6) Legal awareness programme for girls under the auspices of KELSA September 2004
