Mathematics was one of the major subjects taught in the intermediate course ever since the inception of the college in 1921. The Department of Mathematics was established in the year 1925 when the B Sc degree course was started. The M Sc degree course was started in 1965 and in 1999 the department was elevated to the status of a Research Center in Mathematics of the M. G. University. The Master of Computer Applications (MCA) course (approved by AICTE) was started in 2001.

The department has a built up area of about 660 sq.m.consisting of two department staff rooms,a reception room, a research room, a library, 8 lecture halls, two computer labs and a room for the head of the department.

 Activities of the Department

The teachers in the department played an important role in restructuring the UG and PG syllabi of the M G University. The syllabi of the PG and UG programs in Mathematics of the M G University were restructured in two workshops organized by the department in the college.

During the last five years the department organized 3 three-day national seminars, 3 state-level one-day seminars and one five-day workshop. The proceedings of two national seminars have been brought out. Yet another three-day UGC sponsored national seminar is planned to be held during Feb 24 – 26, 2005. A one-day workshop on ‘How to teach Mathematics more effectively’ was conducted for schoolteachers.

Utmost importance is being given to impart the subject in its depth with emphasis on the foundations. Teachers use LCD & OHP and other ICT enabled methods of teaching besides the usual lecture method.

Under the auspices of the Mathematics Association and the MCA Association, the students organize various extra curricular activities. They take part in inter collegiate competitions and other games of mental and verbal skills, which contribute to the holistic development of the individual. The students bring out a manuscript magazine every year. As an innovative activity, crossword puzzles in Mathematics are being formulated. The Mathematics Association conducted an inter school quiz competition on December 4, 2004. The students are also made aware of the various problems facing the society at large. Community extension activities are also arranged. A Regional Seminar on Rain Water Harvesting was conducted on November 27, 2004. Members from Educational Institutions of the District facing water shortage and members the neighbouring Block/Grama Panchayats and the students of the department participated.  “Edit – 2003”,  a three-day technical extravaganza was held in association with the Computer Society of India, Cochin Chapter, by the students of MCA.. Exhibition by leading software firms in Cochin, quiz competitions for schools and colleges, Software project presentations, Face-to-Face etc. were the major items.

( a )  Research

The Department produced the first Ph.D. in Mathematics from a research centre in an affiliated college of the M.G. University. There are 12 research scholars doing research in the department. Two members of the present staff - one member (retd) and another from a neighbouring college serve as research guides in the department. Eleven research papers have been published during the last five years. The thrust areas of research include Fuzzy Mathematics, Fuzzy Economics, Graph Theory, Statistical Computation and Bayesian Inference, History of Mathematics and Stochastic Process.

( b )  Alumni

The Old Students and Friends of the Department have instituted 20 scholarships worth Rs. 22, 900.00. The scholarships are awarded every year on merit at entry level, merit at University and College examinations and on merit cum need basis. Special financial aid of full/ half fee concessions is offered to the students of economically backward classes with good academic record. The semester topper of the MCA university examinations is awarded fee waiver scholarship for the succeeding semester.

The Department has 76 computers (with two full fledged computer labs), 3 overhead projectors, one LCD projector, 7 printers including one laser printer and an audio system with amplifier, speakers, cordless and collar microphone etc.

( c ) The plan of action of the department for the next five years

1 The Department aims at becoming a nationally recognized Centre of Excellence in the field of Mathematical Sciences
2 To develop the Research Centre and to establish networking with other renowned research institutes and to pursue collaborative research activities
3 In addition to preparing students committed to academic excellence, it also aims at providing curricular and extra curricular opportunities, which contribute to the social awareness and social responsibility
4 To develop the Department library into a digital library.
5 To develop the Placement Cell of the Department.
6 To hold regular coaching for UGC NET and other competitive examinations.
